Overview
Enterprise Resource Planning or ERP systems are integrated information systems within an enterprise that serves all the departments. ERP systems evolved out of the manufacturing companies. They are packaged software applications, which is used by different companies as opposed to custom-made proprietary systems. They are also customizable to an extent. ERP systems typically interface with existing legacy systems within a client organization.
An ERP system can include software for manufacturing, order entry, accounts receivable and payable, general ledger, purchasing, warehousing, transportation and human resources. The major ERP vendors are SAP and Oracle.
